A humble calico was my choice of main fabric with thin chequered cotton for the trims. How did I go around making a pattern? Well I though it silly trying to invent a bicycle, so I bought an apron from the store, pinned it in length (as I wanted it shorter), laid it on calico and used it as my pattern. (And if you wonder, yes I did return the apron after that.) As you can see the calico creases quite a bit, so a softer type of cotton in medium weight would probably work better, but then again I do like my rustic look in the kitchen : P
