The art of dressmaking: Why make your own clothes?

I don't often go shopping for clothes, but when I do, all I keep thinking is: "That's cute, but I can make it"

There are many reasons why you would like to make your own clothes, for me there are three main reasons.
The first one is the correlation between the price and the quality. The clothes in the store may look attractive in design, but they are not that cheap and the quality can be quite poor in both fabric choice and make. There are a lot of synthetics on the market which can be quite hot to wear and they don't look as good as their natural counterparts. Me, as somebody who can make clothes and understand fabrics and pattern cutting, when I pick up a very simple polyester skirt without any lining inside with a price tag of £60, I feel that it is a crime to pay for it. I can make the same skirt in wool and lined in my own size for less money.

Fit is another good reason to make your own. You can really make the clothes right for yout size and body shape. I am not tall and I often find that commercial sizes don't fit me well because they are cut for a taller woman. When you make your own clothing, all this of course is not an issue, once you perfect your basic block or blocks, you can just make clothing that always fits.

There is nothing better that a simple sophisticated well fitted garment that is made from the top quality fabrics and fits perfectly. The value for money will be many times more that the high street equivalent and the quality of the make will ensure that the garment will last longer.
