As Halloween is approaching, I have a project in mind that will make a difference to my usual look this season.
I would like to make myself a very sophisticated looking witch's/wizard's hat. I would like to make it look as realistic as possible to go with my every day clothes. I think the closest inspiration that I found of the shape that I'm after is hat of Gandalf the Grey from Lord of the Rings. It has a nice sloppy shape which seems to sit on his head in a very natural way.
For the fabric I will try to find a black medium weight smooth wool. I will fuse it for stiffeness. I'm choosing this type of fabric as oppose to felt wool because I would like it to look like real life accessory, rather than a costume.
Fabric I chose eventually is medium weight wool with a felt feel to it from StoneFabrics. I have fused the rim and the hat top with heavy canvas fuse to give the hat more structure.
I decided to make the shape of the hat a bit sloppy. I made the centre front of the hat dipped on the triangle pattern, so when its sewn into the rim the hat tilts backwards. I also made the circle of the rim into a circle with a gap, so it doesn't stand completely perpendicular to the head, but drops down a bit like a lamp shade.
A few tacks to keep the tip pointing backwards
Instead of bagging out the edge of the hat, which may make the edge overly heavy, I have flat stitched the 2 rims of wool with super lock stitch. The fabric has proven to be quite heavy and dropped way too much when I initially made it up. I solved the problem by inserting a metal wire into the edge of the rim and hand sewing it through the two layers of wool.
Finally the hat is complete and ready to the evening Halloween strolling!
